PRESIDENT BANDA REDEPLOYS WORKS AND SUPPLY PERMANENT SECRETARY

LUSAKA, April 19, 2010 – His Excellency, Mr. Rupiah Banda, President of the Republic of Zambia, has with immediate effect redeployed Works and Supply Permanent Secretary Rt. Col. Bizwayo Nkunika to another position to be announced later.

The President has since appointed Mr. Watson Ngambi as new Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works and Supply. The appointment is with immediate effect.

President Banda has also directed Works and Supply Minister Hon. Mike Mulongoti, MP, to immediately dissolve the board of the Roads Development Agency (RDA). Further, President Banda has directed the Minister of Finance and National Planning, Hon. Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane, MP, to dissolve the board of the National Roads Fund Agency (NRFA) with immediate effect. The re-constituted boards will be announced soon.

The President said the changes he has effected in the Ministry of Works and Supply and specifically in the roads sector, are meant to enhance transparency and accountability so as to speed up the construction of roads throughout the country.

Last week, President Banda directed the Minister of Finance and National planning to mobilize additional funds for construction of key roads in all provinces in the country. The President said he wanted to see the acceleration of road works this month as the rain season comes to an end.

PRESIDENT BANDA TO COMMISSION KONKOLA DEEP MINE AND SMELTER

LUSAKA, April 19, 2010 – His Excellency, Mr. Rupiah Banda, President of the Republic of Zambia, will on Tuesday commission the first phase of the Konkola Deep Mining Project and the Smelter at the Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) on the Copperbelt Province.

The President will officially open the first phase of the Konkola Deep Mining Project in the Copperbelt town of Chililabombwe, which is expected to create about 500 jobs. About 1,000 people were employed during the construction of the project.

President Banda will later travel to Chingola to launch the Smelter at KCM, which will process about 300,000 tonnes of copper per annum. The Smelter is expected to create about 500 jobs on the Copperbelt Province.

The commissioning of the Konkola Deep Mining Project and the Smelter comes barely a month after President Banda re-opened a key mine in Southern Province, Munali Nickel Mine, which has created employment for the local people.

Meanwhile, President Banda will leave the Copperbelt Province on Wednesday for Northwestern Province where he is expected to visit Mwinilunga District. The President will hold meetings with traditional leaders and Government officials in the area before returning to Lusaka.

President Banda to attend Kuomboka

LUSAKA, April 15, 2010 – His Excellency, Mr. Rupiah Banda, President of the Republic of Zambia, will on Saturday attend the annual Kuomboka Ceremony of the Lozi People of Western Province who have invited him to be guest of honour at the event. The President and his delegation will arrive in Western Province town of Mongu on Saturday to grace the Kuomboka ceremony, which is scheduled to take place on the same day. President Banda was invited by the Barotse Royal Establishment to officiate at this year’s ceremony.

President Banda will be accompanied to Western Province by Hon. Michael Kaingu, MP, Minister of Community and Social Services, Hon. Catherine Namugala, MP, Minister of Tourism and Natural Resources, Hon. Eustako Kazonga, MP, Minister of Local Government and Housing, Hon. Solomon Musonda, MP, and other Senior Government Officials. The President and his delegation will return to Lusaka on Sunday.

PRESIDENT BANDA MEETS CHURCH LEADERS

LUSAKA, April 9, 2010 – His Excellency, Mr. Rupiah Banda, President of the Republic of Zambia, Friday held closed door talks and prayers with members of the clergy from various denominations at State House where they thanked him for providing good and stable leadership.

The President met representatives of the Bishops Council where they discussed a number of issues affecting the nation. The Bishops prayed for the President and assured him of their total support as he rules the country.

The Bishops said they were happy with the leadership of President Banda who managed to stir the economy to prosperity by achieving a positive economic growth last year despite the global economic crisis that affected most countries in the world. The Bishops Council also condemned the culture of insults that have characterized politics in Zambia. They thanked the President for having remained focused despite consistent attacks from his political opponents.

President Banda was accompanied to the meeting by Presidential Affairs Minister Hon. Ronald Mukuma, MP while the Bishops Council was represented by Bishop Bernard Mambwe, Bishop Peter Chinyama, Bishop Zachen Mulenga and Bishop Osward Muke. Others include Bishop Wilson Mpundu, Bishop Isaac Chabwera and Reverend Gibson Nyirenda.

The Bishops pledged to continue supporting President Banda and his Government, which they said has brought more infrastructure development in various fields.

President Banda thanked the Bishops for their prayers and support which they have rendered to his Government especially during the economic crisis of last year. He assured them that he will concentrate on delivering on his promises especially in developing the roads infrastructure, health and education facilities throughout the country.

PRESIDENT BANDA MOURNS FORMER MINISTER

LUSAKA, April 8, 2010, – His Excellency, Mr. Rupiah Banda, President of the Republic of Zambia, on Thursday conveyed his condolences to the family of Mr. Haswell Mwale, former Minister of Works and Supply in the UNIP Government who passed away today, April 8, 2010.

The President said he learnt with sorrow the death of Mr. Mwale who died after an illness at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH). President Banda said Mr. Mwale will be accorded a State funeral as a former Cabinet Minister.

“Please convey, on behalf of the Government and the people of Zambia, and indeed, on my own behalf, our deepest sorrow and condolences to the bereaved family and relatives,” the President said in a letter to the bereaved family.

Details of the funeral programme for Mr. Mwale will be announced later.

Meanwhile, President Banda has conveyed his condolences to the family of Ambassador Joel Chitafu who passed away yesterday, April 7, 2010.

The President said he was saddened to learn of the death of Ambassador Chitafu who passed away at Maina Soko Military Hospital after an illness. President Banda said Ambassador Chitafu, who also served as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, contributed greatly to the development of the nation.

“He served the nation in a distinguished manner. His death is a loss not only to the family but also to the entire nation,” President Banda said in a letter to the bereaved family.
