PRESIDENT BANDA MOURNS FORMER MINISTER

LUSAKA, July 4, 2010, – His Excellency, Mr. Rupiah Banda, President of the Republic of Zambia on Sunday conveyed his condolences to the family of Dr. Kabunda Kayongo, former Minister of Education, who died on Friday in Mongu.

The President said he learnt with sorrow the death of Dr. Kayongo who died at the Lewanika General Hospital (UTH) in Mongu, Western Province. President Banda said Dr. Kayongo will be accorded a State Funeral as a former Cabinet Minister. She also once served as a minister of Community Development and Social Welfare in the MMD Government.

“Please convey, on behalf of the Government and the people of Zambia, and indeed, on my own behalf, our deepest sorrow and condolences to the bereaved family and relatives,” the President said in a letter to the bereaved family.

“She served the nation in a distinguished manner. Her death is not just a loss to the family but to the entire nation,” President Banda.

The former minister is due to be buried on Monday, a day which President Banda has declared for national mourning in honour of the late former Minister.
