State hailed over ICT legislation

RELIANCE Technology Zambia has said that Information Communication Technology (ICT) can help speed up Zambia’s development and has commended the Government for putting in place necessary ICT legislation.

Speaking in an interview in Lusaka yesterday, company managing director Rajagopalan Raman said that in this era, almost everything was dependent on the ICT sector and as such, it was imperative that the various stakeholders took cognisance of the importance of ICT to development.

Reliance Technology provides ICT solutions to the Zambian consumers and has been in operation for the last 10 years. The firm deals in all major ICT brands which include HP, Dell, Toshiba, IBM, Epson, Cisco and Microsoft among others.

In the last 10 years, Mr Raman said that Zambia had been doing well to improve the sector and commended the Government for putting in place laws that were meant at curbing piracy in the sector.

“The ICT sector is growing in Zambia and it’s a key player to the country’s development. The ICT sector is important in health, education and tourism and it is a key to development. The Government seems to be formulating proper laws to eliminate piracy. Zambia should be in line with the world standards,” Mr Raman said.

The firm, with a workforce of 26 and has offices in Lusaka and a liaison office in Kitwe would soon be moving to its Lusaka offices to the new premises on Thabo Mbeki Road.

Mr Raman said that Reliance Zambia started constructing its new office premises in August 2008 and should be ready for occupation in the coming weeks. The construction of the modern office premises, Mr Raman said had utilised US$1 million.

“We got the investment permit in 2006 for expansion programme and immediately procured the plot for development. The whole project has taken $1 million,” Mr

Raman said.
